Abstract

Little is known about motorcycle behavior in crosswind conditions. In an attempt to find how motorcycle behavior is related to the effective location where a crosswind might act, this research was initiated. In a parallel theoretical and experimental approach respectively a simulation model and a test motorcycle are prepared. For the test motorcycle, a controlled lateral force simulating a crosswind is simulated by use of amateur rocketry motors. The experimental test results are used to validate the simulation model
allowing for a theoretical tool to define motorcycle behavior in crosswind conditions. The results proves the existence of neutral axes for yaw and lean behavior which in turn prove a duality in behavior. The defined motorcycle behavior is explained using a case example of a motorcycle accident in crosswind conditions.
