EVU XXIV 2015-20 Normal Lane Change Manoeuvres on Motorways and Dual Carriageways

Normal Lane Change Manoeuvres on
Motorways and Dual Carriageways
Ian White

Summary

Whilst investigating a recent incident on a motorway, the author was unable to find any
suitable research into the time taken for a lane change manoeuvre during normal driving
conditions. The author’s interest was in the time between the perception of a lane change
movement and the completion of the manoeuvre, as observed from a following vehicle.
Whilst the initial research was associated with lane changes by cars, it quickly became
apparent that a database of times for other types of vehicle would be of interest.
The research, which is ongoing, indicates that the time for lane change manoeuvres for
different types of vehicle can be estimated based on 15th, 50th and 85th percentiles;
however, whilst there is sufficient data for cars in the UK, the number of data points for
other vehicle types (vans, HGVs, etc.) requires further work.
