Abstract

In spite of this papers title, vehicles produced by Volkswagen AG before 2015 are not designed to record
accident reconstruction data; at least not to our present knowledge. However, accident circumstances
can cause ABS modules to store relevant accident-specific information with every defect trouble code
(DTC) in so-called “freeze frames”, like driving speed and brake status. While native brand-specific diagnostic tools disclose this information for most vehicle brands, VAG’s native diagnostic tool (VAS/ODIS) only reveals a list of unspecified values. We used a reverse engineering approach in order to pinpoint “driving speed” within these values for one specific VAG ABS module; the VAG type number 6R0 907 379 AF (Bosch ESP 8.2i) which is fitted in several Volkswagen and Skoda models. We also assessed the reliability of this speed value for use in accident reconstruction.
