Abstract

The aim of the paper is to present the state-of-the-art numerical methods for vulnerable road users
enhancement including pedestrians and cyclist. The authors, basing on the literature review and their
experience in computational methods, try to answer the question whether numerical methods might
substitute experiments. The main focus of the publication is the head injuries which are often reported
in traffic accidents. Additionally, the authors present a new model of multibody bicycle, with adjusted
dummy, which might be potentially used in accidents reconstructions. Finally, the MADYMO car-to-bicycle is presented where the authors focus on the bicyclist’s head injury. The obtained component of the head velocity was applied as the initial load in Finite Element Ls-Dyna simulation of the advanced head model. The research confirmed that even for moderate impact velocity the fractures in in the diploe
layer are highly possible in the view of set biomechanical criteria.
